-Katelyn Goodell For the past 18 years, counselors from the University of North Carolina have committed course fraud. This came into light five years ago but was recently investigated by Kenneth Wainstein. Counselor used paper classes in order to keep student-athletes eligible. There are about 3100 students involved with this incident. Some workers involved were fired while others remained at UNC though they were stripped of honors they received. As for the students who received their degrees this way, they will be allowed to keep their titles.
-Juanita Guzman "Tumor Paint" was developed by Dr. Jim Olson, a brain cancer specialist at Seattle Children's Hospital and a professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle. This new technology is said to utilize scorpion venom in order to help surgeons find and remove dangerous brain cancer cells. The "Tumor Paint" is created by utilizing a protein found in the paralyzing venom of a Israeli Deathstalker scorpion. This proteim is joined with a fluorescent molecule "Flashlight." The scorpion toxin finds the cancer cells and dags the flashlight to them and makes these celks glow, making it far easier to detect and remove them. Although this process was developed for brain tumors specifically, it has been useful for other forms of cancer tumors as well. Test trials have, so far, been successful. Human trials will begin in Australia this month. If these trials also ho well, trials will begin in the U.S. within six to nine months.

He was transported to the biocontainment center of the Nebraska Medical Center on October 16 to recieve treatment. On October 21 he happily tweeted,"Just got my results. 3 consecutive days negative. Ebola free and feeling so blessed. I fought and won, with lots of help. Amazing feeling." Though Mukpo could not pinpoint exactly how he became infected, he did not regret going to Liberia to help spread the word of the impact of Enola on West Africa.
-Brianna Boahn There are a lot of fans of the NFL out in the world. Most conversations revolve around a players stats or statistics. The NFL is planning to make stats more accurate. This allows the coaches to understand their players' weaknesses and strong points. There is a chip embedded in the shoulder pads of all the players. The chip uses radio frequency identification. The first mentioned use of radio frequency identification was in the E-Z Pass, created by Mario Cardullo. Several companies such as Apple, Motorola and Alien Technology are contributing to the project. Zebra Motion Works is as well. While the game plays out, information such as direction, speed profiles, accumulated distance, fitness groups and heat maps are collected which is then feed to the live broadcast.
-Ebony McPherson After the disappearance of Flight 370, there were a lot of theories being thrown around, but the lack of evidence made it impossible to do anything but speculate. The main theories included a meteor hitting the plane, being abducted by aliens, an enemy attack and even landing on a remote island. Obviously, since these are only theories with no evidence, they cannot be proven, nor disproven. A new theory has been recently added to the list as a most probable occurrence. It is believed that the disappearance was not an accident. It is possible that the pilot, co-pilot or some other qualified individual could have taken control of the plane, with or without help, and then turned off as much electronics as possible in the signal-weakened area, which gave the hijacked plane the illusion of disappearing without a trace. The plane could have then been taken to a secure location. It would have also been possible that the pilots could have been under duress and forced to commit actions that led to the destruction of the plane, like trying to fly somewhere without enough fuel, leading to an emergency landing gone wrong.
-Brianna Boahn DeShawn Carrie, a 18 year old high school student, was mistaken for a burglar. On October 6, DeShawn arrived at his home after school. He was adopted into a family who is African American. The neighbors called the police because they thought that Currie was breaking in. After arriving at the scene on England Avenue in Fuquay-Varina, they walked into the house. DeShawn was in the living room when they confronted him. They assumed that he was a burglar because he wasn't in the pictures on the fireplace. After DeShawn argued with the police, they pepper sprayed him. Judging someone based on their skin color is wrong. It can scar some one's life and add confusion to a situation.
-Ebony McPherson "Color Guard is a mixture of dance and marching. We use flags, rifles, and other props to make the marching band look prettier," said Sarah Martin, a freshman in Color Guard. The Color Guard performs in the autumn and attends marching band competitions, home varsity football games, and occasionally parades. Sarah is extremely happy she joined and said she has so much fun and met so many new people. Some skills she thinks are needed are: good hand-eye coordination, upper body strength, ant the time devoted to practicing and performing. If you are interested in joining, you can talk to the captain, Keyana, about when tryouts are, which are usually in the spring at the end of the school year.
-Katelyn Goodell Recently, Harnett County's network suffered a malware attack, affecting schools and the Board of Education. This virus is called the 'CryptoWall Ransomware'. It's purpose is to obtain and lock files from the computer affected. In order to get access back, a fee needs to be paid. According to PC World, this virus has earned its creators more than $1million. To ensure that school devices don't get infected in the future, remember to not click any pop-ups, don't plug in personal devices to any school device, and don't open emails from unknown senders.
-Juanita Guzman The U.S. Congress in 1990 declared the first full week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in efforts to raise awarenesss about mental illnesses. MIAW's sole purpose is to educate the masses about them. Mental illnesses include Anxiety Disorders, Autism, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, Depression, OCD, Schizophrenia, PTSD and a myriad of others. Just because they might not show obvious signs, approximately 61.5 million Americans experience one or more mental illness. However, a stigma, or a negative reputation, surrounds mental illnesses, causing people to be insecure of the or be afraid of those who have them. "As with cancer, diabetes and heart disease, mental illnesses are often physical as well as emotional and psychological. Mental illnesses may be caused by a reaction to environmental stresses, genetic factors, biochemical imbalances or a combination of these," says mentalhealthamerica.net. Those with mental illnesses are often told, "It's all in your head," or, "Just get over it," when in reality, you have little control over them and how they affect you. If someone you know is or may be struggling with a mental illness, the best thing you can do for them is be supportive and let them know you're there. You wouldn't be scolded or shunned for having cancer, so why is it that way with depression?
-Kat Van Nort JP and Paul Norden were victims of the Boston Marathon bombing. Both brothers suffered severe injuries, including each needing to have his right leg amputated. Since then, both have recovered and attained inspiration from all of the support the received. This prompted their mother, Liz Norden, to start the charitable organization A Leg Forever. While the brothers had been recovering, they met Tommy Cox at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. Cox is a twelve-year-old boy who had to have his leg amputated after a severe boating accident. While in the hospital, they bonded and the brothers could think of no better candidate to support with their charity. They decided to host a charity golf tournament to raise money for a new prosthetic leg for Cox. It was a huge success, and now Cox is able to walk again and go to school.
