North Carolina teachers feel that with the money they are making, their pay is not enough. Houston, Texas is willing to change by giving them a high salary if they leave and educate the students there.
The average starting salary for North Carolina teachers $5,000+ below national average at about around $30,700. Houston is willing to offer$49,100 as the starting pay, very close to $50,000. The Senate and House agree on increasing pay starting next year, but can’t agree on percentage. The Senate is willing to increase the percentage by eight percent but the House only wants to go up six, and teachers still feel that isn’t enough.
On Friday, a job recruitment fair was held by Houston Independent School district in Charlotte. The festival was held in giving teachers a higher pay than what they had, making lowest in the nation. A teacher by the name of Beth Linkston, that did not attend the festival, stated that teachers are teaching because of students, but when you can teach, change lives, and still make a difference in the world but make $20,000 more a year doing it, you’re going to want to take the job. It is said that in past, time would’ve been wasted by Houston coming to N.C. trying to make an offer, but with this offer given a lot of N.C. teachers are having second thoughts.
