Nineteen students from Overhills High School left campus on April the 24. These students were heading to the North Carolina State Science Olympiad Tournament. At this tournament the students competed in 23 different events, all of which were held at NC State University. The events were completed by teams of two students, coached by various teachers and volunteers. The tournament officially started on the 25, but only a few trial events that were not part of the official tournament occurred then. The students used this day to prepare final touches, and to take a little down time. Shur-tape, a tape company based in North Carolina, provided a large tape display for the competitors to play with. This was used by the Overhills team members to play a round of baseball.
The morning of the 25 was quite early for the team members, as the competition began at 7:15 a.m., and went throughout the day, ending at 4:45 p.m. Once all the events were done, and the students were exhausted, all the schools gathered at Dorton Arena where the awards ceremony was held.
At the competition, we had some good placements for Overhills, with a few well earned medals. Joshua Bowen and Chance Handrick earned a medal by placing eighth overall for Air Trajectory, Brenden Resnick and Brandon Peters placed tenth overall for GeoLogic Mapping and finally Gideon Bartlett and Steven Swagler earning tenth place for Scrambler. The team placed thirty-fifth in the entire state, and earned the coveted Spirit Award.
