Biotechnology is an elective course at Overhills High School taught by Stacie Siebert. Biotechnology is the use of living organisms or their products to make or modify a product, improve plants and animals, or to develop microorganisms for specific uses. In this class, you learn how scientists extract DNA from plants and animals and how they use bacteria to kill harmful organisms. Biotechnology is very similar to biology and can help you with chemistry and physical science. Siebert also gets university professors and researchers to come and talk to the class; along with the UNC planetarium Destiny Bus. The Destiny Bus comes to Overhills and the biotech students will be able to get on the bus and act as forensic scientists and solve a fake murder.
A college that that specializes with biotech is NC Central which has the best Bio-manufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise (BRITE) and Central Carolina Community College (CCCC), which has a good bio-process program. Some careers that include biotechnology are pharmaceuticals, nursing, forensics and any kind of health science. If you're interested in any of this information, contact Ms. Siebert in room C107.
