The 2015 Nobel prize for chemistry was awarded to three men for their work on the mechanistic studies of DNA repair. Two of the men, Paul Modrick and Aziz Sancar, are both from N.C., while the third man, Tomas Lindahl is from the U.K.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded these men for their research into a " cell's toolbox for repairing DNA". Your DNA is damaged everyday and if nothing was there to repair it then life as we know it wouldn't be the same. Until recently, DNA was thought to be a stable molecule but Lindahl proved this wrong. What he discovered was that DNA decays quickly without anything to monitor and fix the problem. Another recipient Modrich showed, how the cells correct any errors made during DNA replication. These discoveries provide insight to how the smallest organisms effect us in very big ways.
