In case you haven’t heard, the U.S. Department of Transportation is holding the state of Alabama under investigation. Governor Robert J. Bentley, elected in 2011, signed off on the plan of DMV closures. They announced they are going to close down and reduce a total of 34 offices in the state Sept. 30. Gov. Bentley excused the investigation as a political move.
The move to take down the offices will make it harder for people to get the proper papers to vote. Just last year the state of Alabama passed a law that requires you to have a valid photo ID to vote at the polls. People will have to try getting their license online which could take days. This has concluded to voting rights advocates saying that the plan can deprive people with lower income or rural communities to vote. We hope that Alabama can find a way to fix it.
