Teachers across Detroit called in sick to work, Monday, May 2, closing 94 of the city's 97 schools. Thousands of angry teachers, staff and supporters filled the streets outside of district headquarters to protest after finding out they might not be paid for the work they have done this school year, causing over 45,000 students to stay home from school.
The Michigan legislature approved $48.7 million in funding that will allow the district to meet payroll, only through the end of June. The Detroit Public School system is working on a plan to help with this problem, but no solution has been set in place yet.
