In schools like Overhills High School, avid reading is a must. However, that doesn’t mean students actually read. Many students may think: “why should I be an avid reader?” or “what is avid reading?” The world avid means very enthusiastic or eager. School officials want students to be enthusiastic readers.
Even though many students don’t think about keen reading, it’s actually important to their brains and benefits students’ lives too. When you become an enthusiastic reader you learn how to articulate and express your thoughts. It also helps you build your vocabulary and you learn more about the world and human nature. Reading relieves stress from your everyday life, and improves your memory, creativity and brain function. It enables lifelong learning, and increases brain flexibility. Reading starves off dementia, making it settle in the brain at a slower rate. Dementia is a decline in mental ability bad enough to affect a person’s daily, so reading puts you in better physical and mental health. Ardent reading enhances the senses and helps improves empathy. It can lead to better reasoning, listening, and critical thinking skills. You’ll have an easier time concentrating when reading, it helps discover yourself, and you’re more likely to succeed. Devoted reading is designed to help students in middle and high school levels. The brain produces more white matter when a person reads more. White matter tissue controls learning, which would help when processing language. Reading helps you discover an untapped passion in your soul, like painting and writing. You can learn from history, and you earn higher test scores when you read more. It increases one’s knowledge and confidence. People also gain verbal abilities, which make them better communicators. To become an avid reader, all you have to do is find some time to read and have a good book to read. If you find time to read each day, you are sure to become an eager reader!
