The 67th Emmy Awards premiered on Fox television Sept. 20, which recognizes excellence in the television industry. The host was Andy Samberg, who’s mainly known for Saturday Night Live (SNL) and Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Samberg received many mixed reviews that were both good and bad on how he did as a host. The awards were held in downtown Los Angeles, California during 5 and 8 p.m pacific time and 8-11 p.m eastern time.
This year’s Emmy had the most diverse awards and made history when Viola Davis became the first African American woman to be named outstanding actress in a drama series for her role in ABC’s “How to Get Away with Murder”. Also, Jeffrey Tambor became the first to win outstanding lead actor in a comedy series for playing a transgender character in Amazon’s “Transparent”. Uzo Aduba became the first actress to win a supporting actress Emmy award in both the drama and comedy categories for her role in “Orange Is the New Black”. Jon Hamm finally wins after being nominated for a total of 16 times , eight times for his role as Don Draper in “Mad Men”. Hamm literally climbed on stage, and during his acceptance speech joked that “ There has been a terrible mistake, clearly, this is impossible.” HBO’s “Game Of Thrones” won 12 Emmys including outstanding drama series, which is the most prestigious award of them all. Game Of Thrones set a record for the most Emmys ever won in a single year, and had a total of 24 nominations. It beat the previous record holder “The West Wing” which won 9 Emmys back in 2002. HBO’s “ Veep” won outstanding comedy series, which broke “ Modern Families” ‘s streak of five consecutive Emmy wins. “Veep” also won outstanding lead actress in a comedy series(Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series(Tony Hale). HBO’s “Olive Kitteridge” took home outstanding lead actor in a miniseries or a movie (Richard Jenkins), outstanding supporting actor in a miniseries( Bill Murray), outstanding lead actress in a miniseries or a movie (Frances McDormand), and outstanding miniseries. NBC’s “The Voice” won: outstanding reality-competition the second time since in 2013. Outstanding television movie award went to HBO’s “Bessie”. Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” won outstanding variety talk series and outstanding writing for a variety series. Allison Janney won outstanding supporting actress in a comedy series for her role in “Mom” on CBS. Outstanding supporting actress in a miniseries or a movie went to Regina King for ABC’s “American Crime”. Tracy Morgan made a surprise visit back on stage. It was his first time after suffering from a traumatic brain injury in a car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike back in 2014. All in all, the 67th Emmys was a very memorable award show to watch.
